Sessions in Ireland

The informal manner with which Irish musicians approach their craft is a source of continual amusement (and occasionally amazement) among visitors. The evolution of the musical tradition, however, has been intrinsically influenced by the ‘jam-along' style with which sessions are conducted. A ‘session', as opposed to a ‘gig' which will tend to run according to a practiced set list, is simply a meeting of musical minds, where other musicians are free to join in and indeed where as much time is often spent chatting (or drinking) as is spent producing music.
